Italians have a flair for fashion. Italian fashion differs in different regions, but nonetheless, they are dressed smart and stylish. Women always look put together without looking like they spent hours on hair, makeup and wardrobe. Men look regal in fitted clothing and leather shoes. If you don’t want to to look like a tourist (fanny pack says tourist no matter what country you're in), then adopt some Italian fashion. By no means do I suggest that every Italian dresses to the nines, but after careful observation while visiting Italy, I came across distinct observations.

It is easy to spot a local even in touristy areas like St. Mark’s Square. Women have a feminine and elegant aire about them while men look stylish in their button down shirts, fitted trousers and great leather shoes.
Women look chic and feminine at all times. They are dressed from head-to-toe (meaning hair, makeup and wardrobe and yes shoes too!) I was in Italy during a heat wave of 38 degrees celsius and every local I saw, still looked elegant and stylish despite the scorching temperatures.
Men look impeccable at all times. Their long sleeve shirts and fitted pants are meticulously pressed. Many wore fitted suits and blazers even in hot weather. Italian men aren’t shy when it comes to color either!
Surely, you don’t want to stick out like a tourist in Italy. I'm not suggesting you go out and buy a whole new wardrobe, but by following the don’t list, it may help you blend in.

Don’t go out without doing your hair (putting it in a ponytail doesn’t count)

Don’t wear skimpy clothes (especially if going to a church; don't show shoulders)
Don’t wear oversized clothes
Don’t wear loud bright colors
Don’t wear athletic clothes
Don’t wear athletics shoes or flip flops
Don’t wear t-shirts with flashy sayings
Men
Don’t wear socks with sandals
Don’t wear white socks with shoes
Don’t wear open toed shoes in the evening
Don’t wear shorts in the evening
Don’t wear baggy pants
Don’t wear oversized shirts
Don’t wear sweatshirts or sweatpants
Don't wear graphic t-shirts
Coming from the US, Italian men and women are impeccably dressed; they definitely take pride in their appearance. Overall, think fitted good quality clothes and shoes. When in doubt, it’s better to overdress than underdress!
