Prelude to Adventure in Mexico

Up until about a month ago, I’ve never had a desire to visit Mexico. Mainly, because I was guilty of stereotyping it with visions of spring breakers. I have already experienced my rite of passage and have moved on to bigger and better things and have no desire to revisit my early twenties. After thorough research though, I’ve realized there's more to Mexico than college students drinking and partying into wee hours of the morning.

Luckily, my husband and I love to travel and experience new things. We don’t always agree on the same destination at a given time though; so, when in doubt, we take turns. Since, I picked the last major vacation in Italy, it is only fair that I let him choose this one. Besides, I would never complain about taking a vacation anywhere!

He chose Playa Del Carmen which is centrally located to the sites we want to explore along the Riviera Maya. Although, the area contains many fine all inclusive resorts we opted to stay at a condo. Neither of us are the type of person to lie idly on a beach or poolside all day. Plus, we are sharing a condo with another couple which saves us money which will ultimately allow me more to travel more.

I wasn’t easily convinced on the destination until I realized Chichen Itza, one of the new seven wonders of the world is there. Recently, I’ve been obsessed with seeing the wonders of the world whether, new, modern or ancient.

We will be spending a week in the Riviera Maya and I wish we had more time so I could explore the other great places Mexico has to offer but I can only escape reality for a small period of time.

It has been busy with the holiday’s and all, so I do plan on including some down time which is out of the “norm” for me. I am hoping for some beach time, leisurely strolls about town which include getting to know the locals and submerging myself into the culture.

Of course, Chichen Itza is first on my list, but my list includes numerous other activities like watersports, Xcaret, rappelling down cenotes, and the luxury of a massage on a beach. I also plan on indulging in some tasty authentic Mexican food and trying mezcal (tequila's cousin).
